Martin and I talked about this a while ago. It doesn't really seem necessary anymore. It was really on there in the case of really expensive render operations that would block the UI but now that is not a issue.

That's very true.
In other desktop GIS packages, there is usually a shortcut key to cancel rendering (e.g. ESC) but as you mentioned there is no need for it any more.
