ftool Vector Grid Slow in master

Description
Comparing master to 1.8, using the plugin that came with QGIS (0.62).
Vector Grid output as polygons is fine at 6 or 8 polygons to cover the space, but when the resolution is increased to 100x as many, it slows down and stalls. In 1.8, it runs in seconds, although there is a pause. In master, it runs for minutes, (10?).
The attributes are NULL, too, as a side effect of the Vector API switcheroo.

The "ftools" category is being removed from the tracker, changing the category of this ticket to "Processing/QGIS" to not leave the category orphaned.
