New shapefile permission

Description

I try to create a new shapefile.
Layer -> New -> New Shapefile Layer.
I give it some attributes, press "ok" and get the "save as" dialogue. I try and save it to my C:\\ drive, but when I press "Save" I get the error:

"C:/asdf.shp is not a valid or recognized data source"

I don't have permission to write to C:\\, however QGIS isn't telling me that. It's telling me after the fact that the file its now trying to load (which it just tried to create) doesn't exist.
What it should do is during the save process tell me that it can't save it.
