Large dbf file with export from postgis to shape

Description
Reproduce:
1. Open postgis table in qgis.
2. Save as shapefile
Same postgis table exported via pgsql2shp gives 4x smaller dbf file.
Does not happen with every dataset. It seems that the varchar fields are exported as textfield with length 255. Also some numeric fields are exported as text with length 21.
