QGIS hanging/freezing during extended periods of vector file editing/saving

Description

When editing vector files over extended periods, with multiple saves, the application starts to freeze when: saving edits and toggling edit mode. This seems to affect all three versions I use 2.14.22, 2.18 and version 3.

It also consumes 30% of CPU while in hanging state. (i7 6700HQ)

This is a symptom of a bad plugin. Try disabling all plugins and try again.
