Bug report #19239

Plugin author email visible via plugin manager after install despite assurances in the cookbook

Added by M R almost 6 years ago. Updated almost 6 years ago.

Status:Closed
Priority:Normal
Assignee:Borys Jurgiel
Category:Plugin Manager
Affected QGIS version:3.0.3 Regression?:No
Operating System: Easy fix?:No
Pull Request or Patch supplied:No Resolution:fixed/implemented
Crashes QGIS or corrupts data:No Copied to github as #:27067

Description

In the cookbook at https://docs.qgis.org/testing/en/docs/pyqgis_developer_cookbook/plugins.html#plugin-metadata it says for "email":

email of the author, not shown in the QGIS plugin manager or in the website unless by a registered logged in user, so only visible to other plugin authors and plugin website administrators

However, after installing a plugin via the plugin manager, the author name becomes clickable and when clicking on it the default email client opens with the corresponding author's email filled in, contradicting what it says above in the cookbook.

Thanks for pointing this problem out!

I overlooked this change in the Developer Cookbook. It's 2.5 years old now and many people read it, so we'll probably have to remove this function from the manager :/

Let's discuss it on qgis-community-team ML: https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/qgis-community-team/2018-June/005024.html

I'm not subscribed to this list yet so I can't respond to any of the emails. My answer to https://lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/qgis-community-team/2018-June/005027.html would be:

  • remove it altogether (not so good, we need a way to contact the author
    for administrative purposes)

Yes, and if it's just for admin purposes, why not use the email address of the OSGeo account of the plugin owner? It seems to me that it fits the purpose perfectly.

  • Resolution set to fixed/implemented
  • Easy fix? changed from Yes to No
  • Status changed from Open to Closed
  • Subject changed from Plugin author email visible via plugin manager after install to Plugin author email visible via plugin manager after install despite assurances in the cookbook

There were no other votes for removing the mailto link from the Plugin Manager, so let's just fix the description. As already said, personally I'm against removing it unless there is a more common objection. I apologise for the disinformation, if you already disclosed a valuable address. Hopefully releasing a new version will wipe it out from users' computers soon.
