Description
Create a categorized symbology on a layer and expand its symbology in the layer tree (it might be optional but better highlights the effects imo)
In Vector Layer Properties dialog --> Diagrams, set a pie-chart diagram and add your fields
In the Size tab, set a variable size in order to enable in the Rendering tab, the "legend entries for diagram size" button
Click the button and open the Data-defined size legend dialog
Check the Separated legend items
Click OK and Apply in the layer properties dialog --> In the layer tree, you'll notice that the layer symbology has been collapsed, preventing you to see how the legend would look like in the layers panel (and legend in composer)
Note that this collapsing effect doesn't happen when you choose the "Collapsed legend" option in Data-defined size legend dialog (the collapsed/expanded state of the layer is respected).
